J ul 1 99 9 Experimental search for the decay mode K L → π 0 γe + e −

We report on results of a search for the decay mode KL → π γee conducted by the E162 experiment at KEK. We observed no events and set a 90% confidence level upper limit of Br(KL → π γee) < 7.1× 10 for its branching ratio. This is the first published experimental result on this decay mode. We have compared the decay rates of KL and KS to π π and ππ final states using a subset of the data from the KTeV experiment (E832) at Fermilab. We find that the direct-CP -violation parameter Re(ǫ/ǫ) is equal to (28.0± 3.0 (stat)± 2.8 (syst))× 10. This result definitively establishes the existence of CP violation in a decay process. The recently observed B − → K − π 0 , ¯ K 0 π − and ¯ B 0 → K − π + decay modes appear to have nearly equal branching ratios. This suggests that tree and electroweak penguins play an important role, and inclusion of the latter improves agreement between factorization calculation and experimental data.
